Everything you need to know before your first appointment: from referrals and rebates to what to expect in a session.
No: you can see a psychologist without a referral. However, to access Medicare rebates, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, which includes a referral to a psychologist. We recommend booking a longer GP appointment (at least 20 minutes) specifically to discuss a Mental Health Care Plan.
If you are funded through NDIS, Workcover, or another scheme, different referral pathways apply: contact our reception team and we can guide you through the process.
A Mental Health Care Plan is a plan prepared by your GP that entitles you to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year. After your first 6 sessions, you will need to return to your GP for a review before accessing the remaining 4 sessions.
To get an MHCP, book a standard or long appointment with your GP and tell them you'd like to discuss your mental health and get a referral to a psychologist.
You can book in two ways:
When booking, let us know your preferred location (Hope Island or Upper Coomera), whether you'd like Telehealth, and your reason for seeking support so we can match you with the right psychologist.
Wait times vary depending on the psychologist and your preferred location. We aim to offer an initial appointment within 1โ2 weeks for most clients. If you require urgent support, please let our reception team know and we will do our best to accommodate you sooner.
Telehealth appointments often have shorter wait times and additional availability in evenings and Saturdays.
Standard individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Assessment appointments are longer and will be discussed with you when you book. Group program sessions are typically 90 minutes.
Clinical psychologists have completed a postgraduate clinical psychology degree (Masters or Doctorate) with supervised placements specifically in clinical settings. They are trained to work with more complex or severe presentations.
Registered psychologists have completed an undergraduate degree plus a supervised internship year. They are highly skilled practitioners who work across a broad range of presentations.
The Medicare rebate amount differs between the two: clinical psychologists attract a higher rebate. Our reception team can advise which type of psychologist may best suit your needs.
Your first session is primarily an assessment and getting-to-know-you conversation. Your psychologist will ask about what brought you in, your background, current difficulties, and what you're hoping to achieve. There is no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.
By the end of the session, you and your psychologist will have a clearer picture of your goals and a plan for how to work toward them together.
This varies greatly depending on your presentation, goals, and progress. Some people find 6โ8 sessions sufficient for managing a specific issue. Others benefit from longer-term work over many months. Your psychologist will regularly review your progress with you and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
Medicare provides rebates for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year, which gives a natural checkpoint for reviewing your progress with your GP.
Yes: confidentiality is fundamental to psychological practice. What you share with your psychologist is strictly confidential. There are very limited exceptions required by law:
Your psychologist will explain these limits clearly at your first session.
We do not offer bulk billing. However, we work with Medicare rebates (via a Mental Health Care Plan), NDIS, Workcover, and private health insurance to reduce out-of-pocket costs significantly. See our Fees page for full details.
With a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you can claim a Medicare rebate on psychology sessions. The rebate amount depends on your psychologist's registration level:
You will pay the full session fee after your appointment and Reception will process your rebate on the day. Your rebate will generally appear in your nominated bank account the next business day.
We require at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or non-attendance will incur the full session fee, which is not covered by Medicare or insurance. If you are unwell, please contact us as soon as possible.
Research consistently shows that video-based therapy is equally as effective as in-person therapy for the vast majority of presentations, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. Many clients actually prefer the convenience and comfort of connecting from home.
You need a device with a camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet, or computer) and a stable internet connection. We use a secure, encrypted video platform: no special software needs to be downloaded. Your psychologist will send you a link prior to your session.
Our friendly reception team is happy to help: give us a call or send an email and we'll get back to you promptly.
