When worry becomes your default setting

A little anxiety is normal. It keeps us safe, focused, and motivated. But when anxious thinking becomes the default lens through which you experience everything, it is worth paying closer attention.

What is everyday anxiety?

Anxiety exists on a spectrum. At one end, it is adaptive: the mild tension before a presentation, the alertness before a difficult conversation. At the other, it becomes chronic and pervasive, colouring every experience and decision with a layer of dread or worry that does not match the actual threat level.

The difference between useful and unhelpful worry

Useful worry prompts action: you worry about a deadline, so you start early. Unhelpful worry loops: you worry about the same thing repeatedly without resolution, often catastrophising about outcomes that are unlikely or uncontrollable. If you notice that your worry rarely leads to problem-solving and mostly leads to more worry, that is worth taking seriously.

Common signs anxiety has become a pattern

You may be dealing with anxiety as a pattern if you find yourself frequently anticipating the worst, avoiding situations because of what might happen, struggling to fall asleep because your mind keeps running, or seeking reassurance repeatedly without finding lasting relief. Physical symptoms like a tight chest, shallow breathing, stomach tension, or headaches are also common.

What helps

Research strongly supports several approaches for anxiety, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based interventions. These approaches help you understand how your thoughts drive your anxiety response, and develop a different relationship with worry rather than fighting it.
